Script: At the Cafeteria
Let’s repeat!
The cafeteria is full of noise and movement. Students talk, laugh, and line up to buy food. Jake walks up to one of the lines, holding a tray. A friendly student cashier is waiting at the counter.
CASHIER
Let’s see… juice, sandwich, salad, and soup…
Anything to drink?
JAKE
Yes, can I please get a bottle of spring water?
CASHIER
Gotcha. That’ll be $4.25 in total.
JAKE
How much?
CASHIER
$4.25.
JAKE
Oh—okay. Here you go.
CASHIER
And here’s your change. 75 cents. Make sure it’s all there.
JAKE
Thanks, I appreciate it.
Jake moves away from the lane. Across the dining hall, a math teacher waves to him from a table.
MATH TEACHER
Jake Harris, right?
JAKE
Yes, Ms…?
MATH TEACHER
Ms. Wren.
We saw each other earlier today in the third period.
I just wanted to say “nice work!” for turning in that homework on day two!
JAKE
Thank you.
MS. WREN
Also… I received a note from Mr. Carter—your former teacher at Oakridge High?
He mentioned you’re a serious chess player.
JAKE
Yes, I played in a few tournaments last year. Nothing huge.
MS. WREN
I like that you’re so modest! Listen, we’ve got the next regional student championship coming up in November. We’re making a team now.
JAKE
Oh, wow. I’d be interested in that for sure.
MS. WREN
We also have an after school chess club—every Wednesday.
Practice sessions, mini matches, puzzle drills… You might really enjoy it.
JAKE
That sounds great. I’d love to join.
It’s been a while since I played seriously in a tournament, but I miss it.
MS. WREN
Well, if your matches are anything like your math homework, we’ve got high hopes for you.
What was the last tournament you played in?
JAKE
It was the spring county tournament.
I made it to the semi-finals—I lost to a student from Lakefield in the final round.
MS. WREN
Lakefield, huh? They’ve got a tough coach. Sounds like you did just fine!
JAKE
It was a good match. I learned a lot.
MS. WREN
That’s what a good chess player would say. (smiles)
Alright, I’ll send you the club schedule this afternoon. Welcome aboard!
JAKE
Thanks, Ms. Wren. I appreciate it.

レン先生よ。
今朝、3時間目に会ったよね。
言っておきたいことがあって…まだ2日目だけど、あの宿題を出せたのはすごいわ。
ジェイク
ありがとうございます。
レン先生
それからね…前のオークリッジ高校の元担任のカーター先生からメモをもらったの。かなり真剣にチェスをやってたみたいね。
ジェイク
はい、去年いくつか大会に出ました。大きな大会じゃないですけど。
レン先生
う～ん、謙虚なところがいいわね！
実はね、11月に次の地域学生選手権があるの。今ちょうどチームを作ってるところなのよ。
ジェイク
すごい。ぜひ参加してみたいです。
レン先生
放課後のチェスクラブもあるのよ。毎週水曜日。
練習会、ミニ・マッチ、パズルトレーニングなんかもやってる。きっと楽しいと思うわ。
ジェイク
いいですね、ぜひ参加したいです。
実は大会に出た以来、真剣にプレイする機会がなくて、またやりたかったんです。
レン先生
君のチェスも昨日の数学の宿題並なら、かなり期待できそうね。
